Oldest Living U.S. Bishop Dies at 99

Bishop Odore Joseph Gendron, age 99, Bishop Emeritus of Manchester, NH passed away on October 16, 2020.  At the time of his passing, he was the oldest living bishop in the US.

Born on September 13, 1921, he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Manchester, NH in 1947.  He served in various diocesan pastoral and administrative positions when he was named as Bishop of Manchester on December 12, 1974 by Pope Paul VI.  Within diocesan life, he was known for instituting the Permanent Diaconate program and establishing two colleges known for their orthodoxy and fidelity:  Magdalen College in Warner and Thomas More College in Merrimack.  His resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese was accepted by Pope John Paul II on June 12, 1990 at the age of 68.
